The artistic research project and book YOUTH focusses photographically and linguistically on the structures of rural living together, by means of the hessian village Willingshausen. Its focus is on the village-youth, whose centre of life is the area, but who’s also confronted with the decision to give up the country life for an urban one. The work challenges identification and interconnectedness, team play and group dynamic in local groups, clubs and circles of friends. What part play youth culture and fashion, and what part play “home” and tradition in times of an increasing shift to the right and land glorification?

Vis-á-vis to observations of the local area, local structures and activities, there are eight central group portraits: Local youth-groups and clubs are staged in front of a black background, inspired by the early Dutch group portrait paintings of the 17th century and the local archive-material. But instead of traditional dresses or uniforms, the teenagers present themselves with labelled workday clothes and

team-shirts: Fashion-logos, club-logos or theme shirts create a new membership such as BURSCHENSCHAFT, FREIWILLIGE JUGENDFEUERWEHR or just the YOUTH.

The photographical part of the book is accompanied by the essay “Idealized Images of Rural Life: Between Right-Wing Ideology and the Romanticism of the Everyday” by Yasmin El Sayed, as well as an essay and interview on the photographical work.

The project is based on the 46th artist scholarship Willingshausen and financed by Sparkassen-Kulturstiftung Hessen-Thüringen, Sv Sparkassenversicherung, Kreissparkasse Schwalm-Eder, Landrat Schwalm-Eder-Kreis and the community of Willingshausen.

Das künstlerisches Forschungsprojekt und Buch YOUTH setzt sich fotografisch und sprachlich mit den Strukturen des l.ndlichen Zusammenlebens auseinander, ausgehend von der hessischen Gemeinde Willingshausen. Im Fokus steht dabei die „Dorfjugend“, die ihren Lebensmittelpunkt in der Region hat, aber auch mit der Entscheidung konfrontiert ist, das Landleben für ein st.dtisches zurückzulassen. Gefragt wird nach Identifikation und Vernetzung, nach Team Play und Gruppendynamik in den lokalen Klicken, Burschenschaften und Vereinen. Welche Rolle spielen Jugendkultur und Mode, und welche Rolle spielen „Heimat“ und Tradition in Zeiten des wachsenden Rechtsrucks und der Landverherrlichung?

Gegenüber Beobachtungen der ländlichen Umgebung, dörflicher Strukturen und Aktivitäten stehen acht zentrale Gruppenportraits: Lokale Jugendgruppen und Vereine inszenieren sich vor schwarzem Hintergrund, angelehnt an die frühe niederländische Gruppenportrait-Malerei des 17. Jh. und Archiv-Material der Willingshäuser Malerkolonie. Doch statt Vereins-typischer Trachten, Uniformen und

Trikots, zeigen sich die Jugendlichen in Alltagskleidung und lediglich mit beschrifteten Team-T-Shirts. Mode-Labels und Vereins-Logos schaffen eine neue Gruppenzugehörigkeit, zu der BURSCHENSCHAFT, der FREIW. JUGENDFEUERWEHR oder einfach YOUTH – der Jugend. Den fotografischen Teil des Buches begleitet der Essay „Idealisierte Bilder des Landlebens: Zwischen Rechtsideologie und Alltagsromantik“ von Yasmin El Sayed, sowie ein Essay und Interview zur fotografischen Arbeit.

Das Buch entstand im Rahmen des 46. Künstlerinnenstipendium in Willingshausen und wird unterstützt von der Sparkassen-Kulturstiftung Hessen-Thüringen,
